Project Description

Lagoon House

Status: Complete
Location: Saldanha Bay
Photography: SDKS Architects

This off-grid home sits on a small promontory, where uninterrupted panoramic vistas of the lagoon meet the green and grey tones of the surrounding fynbos. The design replaces an aging asbestos structure, working with the original site footprint to minimise disturbance to the protected flora. The building unfolds as a collection of individually roofed spaces, creating a dynamic spatial flow and composition that feels both grounded and expansive. These thoughtfully arranged volumes shelter a generous outdoor living area from the prevailing South-Easterly winds. Given the exposure to salty winds, materials were selected for their ability to withstand the corrosive environment. The house is detailed with care, taking a restrained, minimalist approach to working with West Coast vernacular style. Within two years, the surrounding fynbos will be fully restored under the expert watch of Deon Van Eeden (Vula environmental services). Additionally, a small area of the carefully curated landscape will be established within the werf of the house, including trees planted for future generations to enjoy (special thanks to Clare Burgess, Landscape Architect) . The result is a home that quietly defers to its extraordinary surroundings.
