Project Description

Mountain Road School Campus

Client: WC Government, DoI & WCED
Location: Woodstock, Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town has many government and private school campuses with long histories. These well-established campuses offer great environments for learning, with airy classrooms, friendly courtyards, and established trees. Features such as stonework arches and plaster mouldings that provide rain protection are durable and delightful, and give the buildings a clear architectural identity. Planning is generally courtyard-based, offering generous, wind-protected, socially vibrant outdoor spaces.

This is Mountain Road Primary School, where the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the Provincial Department of Infrastructure (DoI) collaborated to repair the buildings with respect for the original materials – using breathable plasters and paints, restoring the 260 timber windows, and completing a full campus upgrade. SDKS has been involved with restorations and new building works at historic schools since 1999 and has worked on 18 WCED campuses since 2020.
