Project Description

Micklefield School

Location: Rondebosch

Micklefield School campus is small: the school caters for only one class of students per grade. The whole school fits tightly into the grounds of an old homestead.

SDKS won a competition to design a new school hall, multi-purpose performance space, library and classrooms, with a music school accommodated within existing buildings. A key challenge was fitting this substantial programme onto a very tight site while preserving as much outdoor play space as possible. Enhancing the setting of the beautiful old Homestead offered an opportunity to celebrate the school’s history and was a rewarding part of the process.

The design introduced a new double-storey classroom block alongside the new hall, with clerestory windows bringing in wonderful natural light – this allowed for a minimal footprint.

The school was delighted with the outcome, which broadened their educational offering to include drama, music, and computer studies.
