Museum

Location: De Poort, Paarl

Every element of the De Poort Museum was designed to tell a story. Inspired by the simple, barn-like forms found throughout Paarl, its vernacular architecture reflects the region’s history, context, and identity.

More than a museum, the complex is a self-sustaining cultural hub with adjacent workshops. Visitors are taken on an immersive journey through Paarl’s role as a centre of transport manufacturing in the early 1900s. Warm, welcoming spaces display artefacts ranging from the San cattle society to early animal-drawn wagons and carts.

The project showcases SDKS’ expertise in master-planning, designing educational and cultural spaces, and embedding heritage narratives into contemporary architecture. De Poort Museum is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can educate, inspire, and connect people with history.
